Mission
We seek to empower students to change their lives and their community. This is reinforced through year-round programming, a rigorous, personalized academic program, hands-on application, learning beyond the classroom, explicit social-emotional instruction, and mentorship for our teachers.
Vision
All scholars will have a personalized learning plan with specific goals and objectives. Every student will participate in a continuum of field experiences as outlined in their individualized plan. Students will complete 8th grade with a community service portfolio and the ability to advocate for themselves and their community.

BLA Saturday Academy Literacy Club

The goal of BLA Saturday Academy Literacy Club is to improve literacy skills through the teaching of periods in African-American History.
Position Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Literacy Coach ensures students receive high-quality literacy support. The Literacy Coach provides support on activities and instruction. The Literacy Coach takes a hands-on approach to improving instruction. Guides the Reading tutor and volunteers through best practices in literacy. Reports to the Program Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works cooperatively with BLA staff and volunteers to support literacy development and activity implementation.

Utilizes best practices and knowledge of appropriate content and curriculum alignment to assist BLA staff, volunteers, and parents in closing the achievement gap.

Confers with parents to assist in improving literacy.

Reports to BLS programs Manager
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-
5 years of successful teaching experience in reading, ELA or writing or 2 years’ experience as a Literacy coach.

Positive de-escalation and classroom management experience.

Knowledge of research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.

Knowledge of Common Core and Smarter Balanced Assessment.

Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.

Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative.

Ability to work with and motivate students.

Commitment to the belief that all students can learn.
-
Belief in the mission of BLA.
CERTIFICATION / ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid teaching certification in Reading or ELA

COMPENSATION

The position pays $30/hr for 3 hours for each session
